3 weeks in One Burst from D&G


The Packhorse aka The Ridge at Widdop.

We went to meet our good friends Sharon and Maggie in Hebden Bridge to have lunch and catch up. They took us to The Pack Horse which to locals is known as The Ridge? All the food is home cooked and you go into the kitchen itself to order your food. Great beers, decent wines, excellent pub grub and guess what they don’t do chips other than on Fridays with Fish and Chips. Thanks Maggie and Sharon we’ll definitely return.



I was in Manchester with a couple of colleagues and we stayed at the Arora Hotel Princess Street the hotel bar is The Obsidian which is really cool, cocktails were spot on. We had dinner and Yang Sing which is regularly voted amongst the best Chinese Restaurants and we were not let own. After dinner drinks were to be had at Cloud 23 which is the bar on the 23rd floor of the new 40 storey Hilton Deansgate as we were taking clients there the following night. After a little misunderstanding regarding passes to get in we got up there and the night time views across Manchester were brilliant. My Mojito was ok but my colleagues Rosanna and Karen had an Ena Sparkles plus a Head in the Clouds which they raved about, how useless am I because I can’t remember what was in them.



Osta in Stirling.

We were up in Stirling to collect Luke and his stuff for the last time and the three of us went for dinner on Luke’s recommendation to Osta’s. A contemporary restaurant serving local produce in a modern presentation style. The food and service was very good, a reasonable selection of well priced wines. Osta’s also has 7 Bedrooms that are in fresh contemporary style but unfortunately all the rooms were booked for Luke’s graduation night so we will stop at Hogworts(private joke).



Chatsworth Horse Trials guests of Oce.

Jenny, Rob Chester and us were kindly invited by Oce to their hospitality tent at the Chatsworth Horse trials. Fab day even though we missed the Ferret Racing. Rob won a Magnum of Champagne and the event is well worth a visit as the venue is spectacular. Watching the British Olympic trialists including Zara Phillips jumping the cross country obstacles was scary. Thanks to Alan and Tom the food and wine was spot on!



I was in London on business and had lunch with a favourite client of mine Liz Tubbs and my colleague Richard at Zianni’s which is just off the Kings Road. I hadn’t been for a couple of years but Zianni’s was my favourite Italian in London. Wasn’t disappointed a definite must when in Chelsea.



Hilton Deansgate, Manchester.

Gurdev had to attend an Industry dinner at the hotel but as we were flying to New York from Manchester the following morning we decided to start our holiday in style. We took an Executive Suite on the 20th Floor and had drinks and nibbles early doors at the Exec Suite which were excellent with stunning views thrown in. Dawn joined clients and the Howitt team for cocktails in Cloud 23 before they went to “work”………All went well until the fire alarm and subsequent evacuation at 2.10 AM! We were back in bed an hour and a half later.


D&G’S New York adventure 17/5/08 to 21/5/08

1. Oyster Bar at Grand Central Station.

This venue is truly a temple to travel which is nw restored to it’s former glory. The Oyster Bar has been here since the Station opened in 1913. We shared a light lunch of 6 Great White oysters and fried calamari which we washed down with an excellent Chablis. A must visit when in NY.

2. Cipriani’s Rainbow Grill Rockefelar Centre.

We had tried to book this place earlier in the day without luck. As we walked around Rockefellar Plaza we came across the queues for the Rock Observatory and decided to try our luck as a walk in. After a short discussion we were ushered into the elevator and were on our way to the 65th floor. We were greeted and shown to a small table in the second row from the giant windows. Views of Manchester from Cloud 23 paled by comparison as we stared at the Empire State Building in front of us with Chryser, Met life and the all the others surrounding us. The meal was simply superb and the Tuna starter stole the show for G but D’s lamb hit the spot for her. However the view and our waiter Mike made it truly memorable. WOW what a start!!

3. Morrell Wine Bar and Cafe, Rockefellar Plaza.

After doing the Downtown open top tour we decided on a break and went to Morrell’s. The choice of wines by the glass is huge but it has to be said particularly expensive even by other global cities standards(we found this to be true throughout New York). We met a very nice Brazilian Physician who strongly recommend we try the “Modern” restaurant at MoMa. Whilst were enjoying sharing a “small” cheese plate when immediately in front of the wine bar a Jeep mowed down two passers by, luckily it did not appear any serious injuries were had but we did stay a while longer than we should have so Sunday night was room service and an early to bed.

4. Angus McIndoe 258 West 44th Street.

Up and at it early, Empire State followed by the Circle Line Cruise to Liberty Island made us hungry. We stumbled upon this nice little place in Theatre Land. D had a marinated Pork Chop and I had Mussels in a cream of pea and bacon sauce, both were good, for desert we shared a poached pear in port with chocolate sauce which was yummy. We shared a bottle of Chablis which at $45 was by far the best value wine we had. 2 blocks on was the August Wilson Theatre where the are showing the Jersey Boys Show, how lucky were we as we walked in and managed to bag to 2 cancelled tickets for the following evening’s performance.

5. The Modern at Moma.

Very trendy, extremely popular therefore over busy. Table was booked for 9 pm we eventually sat down almost an hour late. Service up to this point was frankly appalling! Once out of the bar and into the restaurant you can see why this place is top draw. Suddenly the service was transformed to the standard one would expect. We decided to go for it and ordered the seven course taster menu’s along with the seven wine recommended selection, pricey but when on tour………

The food included Canadian Lobster, Squab, Foie Gras which were all exquisite and as you would expect from MoMa all the dishes were works of art. However to our shame we could not finish all seven courses and bailed out after the fifth course. D’s title of 2 puds is no longer valid! We would go again despite the initial experience and the hit to the wallet.

6. Shopping, Theatre, Dinner.

Having done all the sights possible there was only one thing left which of course is SHOPPING and in New York once you get started it’s hard to stop even for food. So with aching feet we made our way to see the Jersey Boys which was spectacular but we hadn’t booked for Dinner. So we chanced our hand once again by seeing if we could get a table at The Rainbow Grill and lady luck was smiling as Mike remembered us and pulled the best favour ever by getting us a front row table bang in front of the Empire State. Tuna again for G followed by the biggest sirloin ever(we now now what double cut means). D had Parma Ham with Melon and stuck to the lamb as it was so good before. Thrown in as compliments of the house were a starter Buffalo Mozzerella to taste and 3 super puddings(meringue, cake, chocolate cake) which we shared with 2 ladies from New Zealand on the next table. As the clock struck midnight the lights went out on the New York skyline one by one. Straight from the Jersey boys…………”oh what a night”!!

7. Antica Bottega Del Vino, 7, East 59th Street.

After the night before a long lie in was obligatory followed by packing. We decided on a coffee followed by a the stereotypical tourist Horse and Carriage through Central Park for our last afternoon. However in true Globe Troffer style we fell upon a real gem. Although we did have a coffee and tea the lunch dishes coming out of the kitchen combined with the excellent wine list made us succumb to lunch. G had a cold meat platter washed down with a fantastic Brunello and D had Lasagne with a green salad accompanied by an superb Gavi. D finished off with Creme Brule and berries. A lovely touch was when D asked for the full name of the GaVi they Peeled the label off the bottle and laminated it to their large buiness card which showed that 2 sister restauarants are located in Verona. Definitely worth a visit A+!

23/5/08 Diva Italiana

Returned from NY and had a catch up dinner with the kids. All six of us agreed it had to be to visit Mattia and Massimo. We weren’t disappointed, special mention must be given to Jenny’s Lobster Catalania.

25/5/08 Vilandry, Great Portlnd Street, London.

Crap day only because yet again LUFC were ever the bridesmaid. However for you Globetroffers I must mention me and the boys Sunday Roast at Vilandry, simply delicious. If in London do go to this place it is an amazing shop, restaurant,bar and florist.

  2. While in NYC this March getting married, Sonia (my wife) and I had our wedding evening meal at a fantastic restaurant called The Spice Market which is situated in the Meat Packing area of Manhattan. I won’t even attempt to write a review apart from to say that the food was truly wonderful.

    I had a starter of Vietnamese spring roll, chicken skewers with lemon dipping sauce and salmon sashimi with golden garlic, lemon and soy. For my main I had the red curried duck.
