On a sunny Saturday we decided to take a visit to York. After a pleasant mooch around the shops and a walk through one of my favourite cities it was time to think about lunch. Normally when in York we eat at the excellent J. Bakers Bistro Moderne and duly arrived at approximately one thirty to find no tables were available. Remembering a recommendation from Pat and Tony we walked the short distance to Ousegate and found ate O clock tucked down a little alley with outdoor seating. On arrival we were greeted and advised a table would be available in 5 to 10 minutes and we were seated in the bar area with our choice of a glass of prosecco and a menu to peruse. To complement the menu there was also a range of ‘Blackboard’ specials from which we chose.
An appetiser of warm mozzarella, rocket. tomato and toasted pine nut salad was chosen to share which was excellent with good quality mozzarella. A highlight of the service was the homemade breads served prior to the appetiser consisting a choice of Apple & Rosemary or Coffee. Both were very good. For the main course I chose Yorkshire Sirloin steak with a Caesar Salad and Linda had Smoked Applewood Omelet with home made chips both washed down with a second helping of Prosecco and a glass of Merlot. Another nice touch was the Chef/Owner visited our table to chat and was very helpful in passing on the recipe for the excellent salad dressing used on my main course.
As always Tony and Pats recommendation was ‘spot on’ and this is another little gem that we will return to.
