The Globe Troffers New Year Break started extremely well with a good 400 mile trip from Leeds to Porthtowan. Arrival at Rosehill Eco Lodges was a great experience as the Lodges and grounds were definitely 5* as described. Once we had unpacked and set the wood burning fire we set off to the legendary Blue Bar, just a short half mile walk, for a drink. Within an hour all the troops had arrived and the bar food as ordered with the Blue Burger as always the most popular choice. After a great start to our holiday we ll set off back and some made it into our hot tubs for a final chill before signing off.
After breakfast we set off to Padstow or Padstein……… Some of us couldn’t resist the Rick’s Fish and Chips so Dawn, Chester and I shared a cod and chips take out which was spot on but the show was stolen by a treat from John of an Oyster Frit which was exquisite.
Some then cycled to Wadebridge and back on the Camel Trail but Dawn, Linda, John, Chester and I walked over to the Memorial and a little beyond before shopping round Padstow. After 2 an a half hours Chester was set for a kip in the car whilst we went for Hot Chocolate and Brandy at the great little wine shop overlooking the Marina.
Some of the guys from an earlier trip to Cornwall had heard from a good source that a trip for lunch to the Gurnards Head near Zennor would be well worthwhile. A windy route and remote but worth it. The view is fantastic looking out to the Atlantic and the welcome was very warm. Although the service was a tad slow to begin with the food plus the Manager enthusiasm made up for it!
Linda, John, Dawn and I shared 2 starters of Rabbit Stovie and Squid which were very good but the Squid stole the show. Dawn enjoyed Beef Stew and I had a Cold Pork with Bubble and Squeak yummy. We shared Cheese all as washed down with a pint of Betty Stoggs, Ripasso, Gavi and Pedro Ximenez Hidalgo. We might add that Julia had the very last chocolate brownie with choc ice cream…
Evening was drinks and Phil’s excellent music quiz, Georgia, John and Linda won! Additionally Tony nominated Jill H to join the Globetroffers which was seconded by Pat and Tess. We are pleased to announce that Jill was unanimously voted on to the Globetroffers membership although a late night call to Jill by Pat to give her the good news was probably not one of our best ideas.
THE BIG DAY! Walks along the cliff, beach and hot tub chilling was followed by dinner and party at the Blue Bar. A 3 course dinner and Vesper cocktails(optional fancy dress 007 theme) in the posh part of the Blue Bar(The Boardroom) was followed by a live band and drinks in the bar until we hailed in 2009!
Then a surprise from Tess, Fire Lanterns to be set off on the beach, how cool, a great idea and a memorable start to a new year.
Very relaxing day just walking on the beach, hot tub was planned……….. John and Linda attempted to walk along to Chapel Porth from Porthtowan whilst the tide was out. The rest of the crew set off a little later for a walk on the beach and Dawn, Chester and I planned to meet the Haynes on their way back and return to the Lodge. We did indeed meet up but the Haynes trip had unfortunately been unsuccessful due to the a mix up re tide times. Linda walked Chester back and the rest set off on a second attempt. About half way there the tide turned but it appeared we may be able to beat it with a little jumping of rocks. However some parts were a little challenging but John was very gallant and carried Tess over one channel as he had Wellie’s on, all that needs to be said is that both got wet. Undaunted Lucy, Georgia and Josh motored on and became separated from the rest of us. Off John went again and escorted the girls through knee deep water then went back for Josh and piggy backed Josh until they both sunk into a the wet sand……………a wet but funny ending! A quiet evening in front of a real fire. Steak and Chips(twice fried of course) with Amorone bought for G as a Xmas.
Julie had booked a trip to Fifteen at Watergate Bay but unfortunately was ill and could not join us. We had a private room with fab views across the bay and the atmosphere was relaxed. Dawn and I shared a mixed antipasti, the best we’ve ever had and for mains Dawn had Lamb with Lentils and I had an excellent Squid Tagliarini, shared cheese completed a superb lunch. Dawn had an Apple Mojito aperitif worth mentioning, we shared a bottle of Gavi de Gavi, glass of Fairview and great espresso’s with a cognac each. We will return.
Our last evening was spent first chilling in the hot tub and a final night at the Blue Bar.
A big thanks to all at Rosehill Lodges for allowing Chester to join us on our NY break…
