On a quick in and out meeting in Devon (Met Office, Exeter to be precise) I happened upon a fabulous little town just on the estuary of the River Exe.

Topsham is about 3 miles from Exter and the sort of place you’d probably travel past on the way to somewhere, well, more Cornish.

But we found a great liitle spot for lunch and a cheese shop that was right out of the top drawer. Country Cheeses was right on the main street (‘that’s pretty much all there is’ said the cab driver) and a great find it was.

When I asked the proprietor if she sold local cheese her response was “85% of our cheese is local”. I was very interested from there on in.

although we were flying back to Leeds in the afternoon, we managed to bag some rather special fromage – sloe gin soaked goat cheese has to be the standout along with a somerset blue that punched pretty hard and a cheddar that had been around the block and then some.

Outstanding cheese performance from out of the way west country hideaway.
